Steve and Arron drove a boat across the lake. Their speed on the return trip was 5mph more than the first trip across the lake. It took them 3hours to cross the lake and 2hours on the return trip. What were both speeds?

going- rate= x time=3hrs distance 3x
returning-Rate=5+x time=2hrs distance=2(5+x)

i don't know what to do next?

going- distance = 3x

returning- distance = 2(5+x)

i don't know what to do next? Write an equation.

Assume that the boat's path is the same going and returning, so the distance is the same both ways.

3x=2(5+x)

3x=2(5+x) <<<< Correct

Now solve for 'x'.... you would also need to find x+5 (the return speed)
