I have just started college at the age of over 40 so I need some help in understanding how to do this problem.

1/2x - 2 = 1/3 (x-2)

Re: need to learn how to solve equations containing fractions

find four consecutive even integers whose sum is 340

Next time, please start your own thread: click on NEWTOPIC.

Your equation is:
x/2 - 2 = (x - 2)/3
Multiply each term by 6 (to get rid of fractions):
3x - 12 = 2(x - 2)
3x - 12 = 2x - 4

Can you finish it?

Let x = 1st integer; the other integers are x+2, x+4 and x+6 ; since their sum is 340, then:
x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 = 340
4x + 12 = 340

Finish it.

For the consecutive question, you should first divide 340 by 4- that will get you the median of the four numbers. Yet, four is an even number, so it will be between the second and the third numbers. 340/4 is 85. Since they have to be even, then the two middle numbers would be 84 and 86. Then, the other two numbers will be 82 and 88. 82+84+86+88 is equal to 340. I know this strategy because my math teacher taught me it (Thanks, Ms. N!!) :D
