I have a math exam tomorrow and I'm trying to refresh my memory of what we learned throughout the year. Solving Rational Equations has me stumped. If someone could help me out that would be great.

First: Easy one:

2x+4
x^2-4

Second: Multiplying
25x^2-9
4x^2+x-3
Multiplied by:

8x-6
5x^2+8x+3

It would be a great help if someone was just to show the steps, I can usually understand by seeing the answer. Thanks so much to anyone who can help.

1) I will assume that the instructions are to "simplify".

. . . . .\(\displaystyle \large{\frac{2x\,+\,4}{x^2\,-\,4}}\)

Factor. (Hint for the denominator: Difference of squares.) Then cancel the common factor.

2) I will assume that the instructions are to "simplify".

. . . . .\(\displaystyle \large{\left(\frac{25x^2\,-\,9}{4x^2\,+x\,-3}\right)\, \left(\frac{8x\,-\,6}{5x^2\,+\,8x\,+\,3}\right)}\)

For the first numerator, apply the difference-of-squares formula to factor. For the second numerator, take the common factor of "2" out front. For the denominators, factor the quadratics by whatever method you've learned.

Then cancel any common factors, and multiply whatever is left of the numerators and denominators.

If you get stuck, please reply showing what you have tried and how far you have gotten. Thank you.

PLEEEAAAASEEE someone help
Please note that this is not a chat-room environment with paid staffers waiting on-hand to provide instant replies. This is a message board, and the tutors, some of them fellow students, are volunteers who give of their time when they are able. While some posts do happen to be answered within minutes, posters should be prepared to wait hours, if not days, for an online reply.

Thank you for your consideration.

well apparently a lot of people sit on the computer all day waiting for these questions so i would ahve thought you would have liked this

2x+4
-------
x^2-4

reset the top line to 2(x+2)
and the bottom line to (x+2)(x-2)

and cancel out the common factor of (x+2)

Even if you didn't understand my "note" (above), the lack of an instant reply (about which you were complaining earlier) should have hinted to you that your conception of this service was perhaps not entirely correct.

In any case, you have been provided with hints and suggestions on how to proceed; please show your work in your next reply.

Thank you.

Oh really? On what do you base this comment?

Most of the folks you will find volunteering on this and other free help sites are current or retired math teachers, engineers, or other interested people. We drop in to help when we have the time....and we don't like being yelled at if we haven't provided a response in just minutes. If you want instant help, I'm sure a search of the internet will provide you with multple places to spend your money (cuz you sure aren't going to get instant help for free!).
