solving logs: if y = log3^x, find log3^x = 5

Lets say for y = log3^x

find log3^x = 9

I know, intuitively, that 3*3 = 9, so x = 2

but how do I solve for x, with something like this:
log3^x = 5


We just started logarithmic functions....and I'm confused.
