I am in the sixth grade. I have a problem that I know the answer to but not sure how to solve it. Please help.

50 - y = 30
y = 20

I thought I would add 50 to each side but it does not come out right.

You have the right idea going on.

Try subtracting 30 from each side first.

You will notice that everything will be on one side. After you can just add y to both sides to get y where you want it.

50-y=30
50-30=30-30 ?????

I was doing this
y-50+50=30+50
Y=80

I know 80 is not right but dont know how to solve the way you said

50 - y = 30

subtract (30) from each side.

50 -(30) - y = 30 - 30

20 - y = 0

now add (y) to each side

20 +(y) - y = 0 + (y)

20 = y

You have the right answer, but you dont need to make it so complicating!

just subtract 30 from 50

Miclee, LOOK at equation carefully: 50 - y = 20

That says: what number must be subtracted from 50 to leave 20?
Or: 50 - a number = 20
The y simply represents "a number"
So of course 50 - 30 = 20; so y = 30
Kapish?
