So I have this square.

Let each corner of the square be labeled A, B, C, and D.

This square has a line from AC and BD. Where the lines insect, let's call it E.

The length of BD is 4x - y + 1.

I'm supposed to find the values for x and y.

The book gives the answer that AE = 2x - 1 and thus x = 7.5. EC = 3y + 5 and thus y = 3.

How does one arrive at this answer?

I will guess that this labelling is done in some order (clockwise or anticlockwise) around the perimeter of the square.

This square has a line from AC and BD.

I will guess that this means that the square actually contains two line segments, one from A to C and the other from B to D.

How does one arrive at this answer?

With just the information thus-far provided, one does not. One cannot. :shock:

Too bad they didn't give you any information relating x, y, and the various segments.
