Hi there,

I am trying to get this question into an simultanoues equation with little success :( please help.

30 factory operatives work a 37 hour shift per week. If 30 operatives comprise of managers earning £9.50 / hour and line workers earning £8.50 / hour. How many managers and how many line workers are there if the weekly wage bill is £10323.00

Thanks in advance!

For all word problems- the first two steps are:

1) Name (assign variable name) to things you need to find.

Here you need to find:

# of managers = M

# of workers = W

We will assume the both the managers and the workers get paid for 37 hours of work/week

2) Translate the given information to mathematical equations. What are the information given?

30 factory operatives work → M + W = 30 ................................................................(1)

managers earning £9.50 / hour and line
workers earning £8.50 / hour. ...the weekly wage bill is £10323.00
→ M*9.5 + W*8.5 = 10323/37 = 279 ..........................(2)

Two equations - (1) & (2) - and two unknowns - M & W. Solve for those using your favorite method.
