If (5,k) is a solution of the equation 2x+y-7=0, find the value of k.

There is no k in the equation. I am not understanding where k came from. Please help me understand.

You need to understand that the notation "(a, b)" means the point (x, y) on a Cartesian coordinate system. If you are told that "(5,k) is a solution of the equation 2x+y-7=0" then x= 5 and y= k. Replace x with 5, y with k in the equation and solve for k.

By the way, your problem (as posted) does not involve simultaneous equation. It has one equation and you need to solve for one unknown.
