Simplifying through factoring: 3x^2 - 2x - 2

Please help, I'm terrible with simplying through factoring and creating it into a (3x+y)(1x+y) kind of problem.

This isn't a nice factorization. Try the quadratic formula or completing the square.

I've never learned both of those methods.
I suppose my teacher is looking for a "Can't be simplified."
