I have (a+1)(a-12)
---------------
-(a+1)(3a-1)

i need to simplify as much as possible.
can the two (a+1)'s cancel even though one of them is a minus. what about the other factors, do they simplify at all
thanks for your help

Yes, they cancel out:
(a - 12) / -(3a - 1)

Since -(3a - 1) means -1 times (3a - 1), then:
(a - 12) / (1 - 3a)
