As I understand this, somebody started with the expression 73 - 2[255 + (-3)73], which evaluates to 1, though we don't need to know that yet, and rewrote it as 7*73 - 2*255. You want to know how they did that.

If I wanted to do that, perhaps because I saw 73 in two places, I would have distributed the -2 to get

73 - 2(255) - 2(-3)73 = 73 - 2(255) + 6(73),

and then combine the two multiples of 73 to get

7(73) - 2(255).
