Simplest form

Hello, I know of the answers to these but I'm not sure how to work them out. Can you please work them out in simplest form? I'd really appreciate it.

1) 3x^2 - 1 = 47 answer is {-4, 4}

2) x^2 - 2x + 17 = 0 answer is {1 + 4i, 1 - 4i)

3) 4x^3 - 12x^2 = 9x - 27 answer is { -3/2, 3, 3/2}

4) |x| = 6 answer is {6}?

5) ?x + 10 = x - 2 answer is {-1}?

Well, since you can't do #1 (simplest), you need classroom help...not provided here.
