I'm really bad at percentages, and I might sound dumb, but I don't want to get it wrong in front of the whole class tomorrow.

Susie was buying a dress which cost $40.00 but had to add $7.00 for shipping and handling. Also including the sales tax which was 8 1/4%. How much in total does she have to pay?

Thanks for those reply!! :D

It's a bit of a tricky question. There are a couple of ways to go about it. One, of course, puts more cash in the vendor's pocket.

If you arranged the shipping yourself, it might look like this:

($40.00 * 1.0825) + $7.00 = $50.30

Since they are doing it for you, it might look like this:

($40.00 + $7.00)*1.0825 = $50.8775 which they would round to $50.88

Since the first one came out to the penny, that might be what the problem wanted.

Well, my teacher just wants us to practice the tax % part--she doesnt want us rounding it for some reason.

So I only know part of the answer, $40 + $7 = 47.00 <--(she doesnt want us to round it, just leave it at $47) + 81/4(the sales tax)= ???
I'm not good at adding tax/percentages together.

you talk too much

sales tax = 40 * .085 = 3.40 ; so you've now practiced the tax part !

Are you talking to me? Psh, if you are then I'm just trying to explain- :D haha--thank you so much:)

Its a shame. Denis was so close.
sales tax = 40 * .085 = 3.40
should read
sales tax = 40 * .0825 = 3.30

Looks bad for me; that was on 19th; 365/19 = ~19.2;
I'm headed for over 19 errors this year...
