Im having trouble solving BC and CE

AB=2 AC=1 DE=5 and CD=6.find BC and CE

AB/DE=AC/CE=BC/CD

I came up with....
2/5=1/CE
2(CE)=1(5)
2(CE)=5
??????????

2/5=6/BC
2(BC)=30
??????????

THE BOOK SAID THE ANSWER FOR CE WAS 2 1/2 AND FOR BC 2 2/5 BUT I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY GOT THE ANSWER

??????????<<<< If two hats cost $4 - how much does one hat cost? How did you find it?

2/5=BC/6
5(BC)=12

They told me to match the corresponding sides

Okay, your work shows that you already did this.

(Note that you mixed up two sides when you set up the equation with BC. Subhotosh corrected your mistake. See his post above; the correction appears in blue.)

You've now got two equations to solve:

2 * CE = 5

5 * BC = 12

Instead of solving these, you typed "???????".

It looks like you forgot how to solve a one-step equation.

Does the following example ring any bells?

Solve 5x = 10 for x.

We isolate x by dividing both sides by 5.

5x/5 = 10/5

x = 2
