A rectangular storage unit has dimensions 1m by 2m by 3m. If each linear dimension is increaed by the same amount.

a) What increase would result in a new storage unit with a volume 10 times the original?

b) How many possible solutions are there to this problem? Explain your answer.

c) Sketch the graph of the information presented in this problem. Show how the zeros of the function relate to the answer.

I only need help with c). I am not sure how to explain this. Once the graphic is sketched, I do notice that there is a slight curve when x = 2 which is also my answer to a) (the increase). Can anyone maybe clear this up for me?

Extend the graph to x=-5 and +3 to get the full picture. The wiggle around -2 is the other two imaginary answers. x=2 is the only real answer.

Hi,

I was just wondering on how you got the x=-5, +3 and -2..?

Thanks for your response!

It was x³ so I knew there were 3 solutions. The x=2 was very steep so I looked at the y values for 3,& 1. It was still droping to the left so I continued with 0,-1 & -2 where it slowed so I continued with -3 & -4. -5 was dropping steeply again so I knew the area of interest was in that range.
