Seven thousand dollars is divided into two scholarhips. Twice the amount of the smaller scholarship is $1000 less than the larger scholarship. What is the amount of the larger scholarship?

I wrote equation as 2(x) as Twice the smaller amount, and 7000-1000 (1000 less than the larger)

THe answer is wrong anybody knows????

Could you please show us your naming of the variables and your equation? Possibly, we can figure out where you went wrong.

Ok I did

Twice the amount of smaller scholarship = 2x

1000 less than = -1000

Larger scholarship =7000

Equation= 2x=7000-1000

Let us call

S = smaller scholarship

L = larger scholarship

Twice the amount of the smaller scholarship is $1000 less than the larger scholarship

That translates to:

L - 1000 = 2 * S..................................................................(1)

Seven thousand dollars is divided into two scholarhips

Write that into an equation....................................................(2)

From (2) write 'S' in terms of 'L'

substitute into (1)

Solve for 'L'

Larger scholarship =7000<<<< That is not correct - Sum of the scholarships is 7000

Please explain yourself I dont get it, Substitute 2 where ? and 1 ? and why Solve twice for L?

Did you write the equation #2 - according to "Seven thousand dollars is divided into two scholarhips."?

If you did - what is it?

If Jos and Jim have a total of 7 apples, and Jos has 2 apples, then Jim has 7 - 2 = 5 apples

If 2 scholarships total $7000, and the smaller is $1000, then the larger is 7000 - 10000 = 6000
If 2 scholarships total $7000, and the smaller is $x, then the larger is 7000 - x = ?
Do you SEE that?

Igor, I suggest you quit complaining and start thinking...
