When a number has been written as the product of a number x, where 1 <= x <= 10, times a power of 10, it is said to be written in scientific notation.

Do you see why your answer to (a) is wrong? What should it be?

Also, do you see where you slightly misquoted the definition? Look at "1 <= x <= 10".

Yes, you are right.

The answer to (a) should be 9.687 x 10^3.

The definition should include 1 <= x < 10.
