Hi

Please help me with the following

1) Are the terms "row reduced matrix" and "row echelon matrix" synonymous?

2) What are the conditions for a matrix to be identified as "row reduced matrix" and/or "row echelon matrix" .

3) What are the conditions for a matrix to be identified as a "row reduced echelon matrix".

Different websites give different answers.
Is this correct : http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Linear_Algebra/Row_Reduction_and_Echelon_Forms

If you could waste some time explaining it to me I would very much appreciate it. Alternatively, a link would suffice.

Please help!!!!!!!

"The" answers for your class will be the definitions provided by your textbook or your instructor. If you can't tell for sure from your book or your class notes, ask your instructor! ;)

Thank you for replying

I am a working person preparing for a competitive exam called GATE. I have no guidance except some correspondence material and would like to verify if what is mentioned there is correct.
I know this is a trivial question and the answer can be found in any textbook but if possible please waste a few moments answering the question.

The "row echelon form" of a matrix has only "0" to the left of the main diagonal. "reduced" row echelon" has either "0" or "1" on the main diagonal also.
