A line passes through __ which point also lays across this line?

:sad::confused: :cry: :!: I've looked all in my Algebra1 textbook and online but I'm still not sure how to solve this. I'm desperate and there are many more questions I have but I'll just see if I can get help on this one first...: WHAT ARE THE ROOTS OF THE EQUATION... x^2-x-6=0 (ANSWER CHOICES: A) {-2, 3}, B) {-3,2}, C) {-6, 1}, and D) {-3, -6})

hmm... I'm not really sure how to delete this.. :confused::(

What is the mathematical meaning of the word "root"?

What is the meaning of the phrase "quadratic equation"?

What is the significance of the root of a quadratic equation?

Does your book mention the zero product property, the quadratic formula, or "completing the square"? These are all techniques for solving quadratic equations. It makes no sense that your book would give such problems without giving you the usual methods for solving them.

By the way, the words in blue are links to definitions.

I don't know... I just deleted it. I had no work to show for it because I don't even know where to begin. I was just going to move on to other questions I couldn't understand and then hope that later I could find a video tutorial explaining something at least relatively close to this question. Thank you for your replies.

Look. It is fair to say that you need help just starting. Did you look at the definitions that were indicated in blue in my previous post? If not, please do so. That is a good place to start. Then come back and try to work through the problem that you gave. We will help anyone who tries to help herself.

Oh goodness! I think I may have (possibly) found it out! Does {-2, 3} sound like it may be the right answer? I entered it on my calculator and those are the two places that it crosses the x axis. Is that where I was supposed to get the points from?

Dannielle, seeing it on the calculator should not * * be acceptable as supporting work if your instructor wants to see it done algebraically. ** Maybe your instructor allows you to use a graphing calculator to get the x-intercepts/roots?

Did your teacher not teach how? What grade are you in?

Finding a solution using a calculator certainly won't help you.
Calculators are not allowed at tests, right?

I'm in 8th grade... yup :( Calculators are allowed on all tests... And... yeah.. sorry.

She actually never taught us this so I'm just winging it.. Sorry. I'll go in to see her instead of going to the lunchroom this week to see if she can explain some things.
 
Please do not skip lunch. This will only make your afternoon classes suffer. Just respectfully point out to your teacher that if you are to be assigned quadratic equations, then some theory on how to solve them should be provided.

Also, I would like to point out that on most math help forums, deleting/editing out the contents of the original post is discouraged as it devalues a topic. It also casts suspicion on the OP of academic dishonesty. While I don't think this is true on your case, I just wanted to advise you on how this might look to others. ;)
