Good morning,

I have an exam on monday for a permanent position and I need to refresh my memory on some fraction, decimal and percentage. since its been over 15 years I've been out of high school. I need some help with explanation on this problem.

here goes:
12 1/2 % of 5416

and the other is
2 1/3% of 80%

Do you have to show your work?

If not grab your calc...

12 1/2 = 12.5

To find the percentage, we got to move the decimal place 2 places to the left of the percent: .125

So 5416 times .125 = 12 1/2 percentage of 5416

Try this on your second problem. If you don't understand this, then ask us some questions.

Ok.

Well you still just make the switch:\(\displaystyle \; \,12.5\,
\to\,.125\)

Then do:

5416
x.125
_____

Just multiply as if the decimals were not there. When you get your answer move the decimal place 3 decimals place to the left.

In this context, "of" means "times", so you'll be multiplying.

Also, you'll need first to convert the percentages to decimals or fractions. Since the percentages in this case are mixed numbers, fractions might be the way to go.

"Per cent" means "out of a hundred", so 25% means 25/100 = 1/4. To find 25% of 12, you would multiply: (1/4)(12) = 3.

To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole-number part by the denominator, and add in the numerator. For instance, 2 3/5 = [(2)(5) + 3] / 5 = 13/5.

Putting it all together:

. . . . .12 1/2 % of 72

. . . . .12 1/2 = [(12)(2) + 1] / 2 = 25/2

. . . . .12 1/2 % = (25/2) / 100 = (25/2) (1/100) = 1/8

. . . . .(1/8)(72) = (1/8)(72/1) = 72 / 8 = 9

Note: We cannot teach courses, review or otherwise, within this environment. If you need more in-depth lessons than what you can find online, then please consider hiring a tutor and working with him a few hours a day.

Thank you.
