I have problems understanding how to do simple fractions such as reducing to the lowest terms. I have only recently went through division and now moving on to fractions. Can you please explain the process of reducing fractions so a beginner can understand ? My problems with math go way back and I have never had a good understanding of math, in fact, I freeze up when being put on the spot with even the simplest math problem. What can I do to overcome this problem ? How can I master my fear of math and see the light at the end the tunnel ? I need help with with the process of reducing fractions step by step first, can you help please ?

Are you acquainted with FACTORING numbers? That is where it has to start.

Like this:

6 = 2*3
12 = 3*4 = 3*(2*2)
36 = 4*9 = (2*2)*(3*3)

I'm just breaking down the number until it will break down no more. Do you see what I am doing?

Well, our intent at this forum is usually not to teach or do your homework for you, but to solve specific problems to aid you.

However, i'll give you a short lesson on how you know to reduce fractions.

say for example you want to reduce the fraction
Code:
63
__
27
your first objective is to find the GCF (greatest common factor) in the numerator and the denominator.

Here the GCF is 9. So factor a '9' out from the number in the numerator and the denominator.
Code:
9(7)
____
9(3)

Now divide out the 9. And you are left with the reduced fraction.
Code:
7
__
3

If you have specific questions in the future, please post them.
However, refrain from posting several questions which all involve the same skill to solve.

Are you learning this on your own, or are you in summer school?
If in school, did your teacher not teach a little before giving you
fractions to reduce?
If he did, what's wrong with him/her?
Did other students understand, but you didn't?
