The expression a^2 - a (AKA the radicand) does not contain any squared factors, so the square root might not be reducible in the way that you have in mind. :cool:

What do you have in mind?

Simplification is in the eye of the beholder. Some might call the following simplification - I call it rearranging.

\(\displaystyle \sqrt{a^2 \ - \ a} \ = \ \sqrt{a} \ * \ \sqrt{a \ - \ 1} \)

hoping that I could somehow get rid of the radical... but I guess not

If this radical is part of a larger exercise, we need to see the big picture before determining whether the radical can be eliminated.
