factor the numerator and the denominator ... cancel the factors common to both the numerator and denominator.

factor the denominator ... same drill.

Just remember that when we say "cancel" we don't mean that anything disappears. \(\displaystyle \frac{x}{x}\) becomes \(\displaystyle \frac{1}{1}\).
