Which of the following functions has no distinct real zeros?

f(x) = x6 - 1
g(x) = x3 - x2 + x - 1
h(x) = x3 - 2x2 - x + 2
p(x) = x4 - 3x2 + 2
p(x) = x4 + 3x2 + 2
 
Just looking at the leading terms eliminates two of the options....

What methods have you tried? Graphing? Descartes' Rule of Signs?

Sorry; no.

Are you familiar with polynomials and their graphs? How their degrees relate to their overall shapes (their "end behavior")? Do you know how to solve polynomials? Are you familiar with the relationship between "real zeroes" and "x-intercepts"?

I'm sorry you view trying to help students learn how to do things on their own as "playing games". Providing step-by-step instructions and asking which tools the student has are part of "helping".

...or did you mean "just do his homework for him"? If so, then please don't be shy: Go ahead and "help".

Well, you're very sweet to say that I'm really good at math -- :oops: -- but I'm not. Math was always one of my worst subjects, actually, and having struggled with the material myself often helps me figure out useful ways to help a student work through a problem.

Regarding the rest of your message, I'm sorry that standard tutoring techniques upset you. Please clarify what techniques you would rather see used. Thank you.

We seem to have an attitude problem wandering about this evening. No one here is implying, portraying, or demonstrating arrogance, least of all STAPEL. We're just here to help. The fact that you are here shows some willingness to comply with a simple request.

If you get some time to do some other work, do a web search for "Inquiry-Based Education". You will find a massive amount of information. On the other hand, you will not find a single professional educator suggesting any value in "just-give-me-the-answer-based education."

Let's start learning and stop thinking so highly of ourselves, shall we?
