For an eighth grade math class would the ratio be written a/b or a:b? We are being asked to write a ratio but in another question on the paper it asks which ratio is correct and the answer choices are written a/b? Would it be to the disgression of the teacher?

Either notation is correct, unless the teacher of textbook has specified a particular choice.
Acceptable... a/b, \(\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}\), and a:b.

Loren,

We're working on the following problem -

The following ratio: 40 seconds: 1.5 minutes: 1/6 hour, can be expressed in lowest terms as?

I get 2/3:1.5:10 all expressed in minutes, but the answer key shows the answer as: 4:9:60

What am I not getting? Is the key wrong?

Thank you very much.

Perhaps, you confused yourself by mixing numbers in rational and decimal form together. Let's write 1.5 as 3/2.

2/3 : 3/2 : 10

To obtain the answer expressed in Whole numbers, multiply each number in the compound ratio above by 6 (the LCM of the denominators 2 and 3).

there are actually 4 ways to write a proportion in the forms of

a to b a/b a:b  and A over B in fraction or divison form to be simple

Moderators, please catch up on these illegal and/or offensive posts, such as the one above.

I just sent a PM to Ted about it.
