Question: Your company makes fridge magnets. The materials for each magnet cost $0.14. Your company has additional expenses of $27000 a year. The per-magnet cost is total costs per year divided by number produced per year. If your company can make and sell twice as many magnets next year as this year, the per-magnet cost will be reduced by $0.90. How many magnets is your company making and selling this year???

This question really has me stumped, and i have attempted to answer is several times...all i need is an idea as to how to set the equation up! thanks for your help!

It is unfortunate that you did not show your work. It is very difficult to check work that we can't see.

i) Pick a variable for the number produced this year.

ii) In terms of the variable in (i), write an expression for the variable costs for this year.

iii) Using the expression in (ii) and the value given in the exercise for the fixed additional costs, write an expression for the total costs for this year.

iv) Divide the expression in (iii) by the variable in (i) to obtain an expression for the per-unit costs for this year.

v) In terms of the variable in (ii), write an expression for the variable costs for next year.

vi) In terms of the expression in (v) and the given fixed costs, write an expression for the total costs for next year.

vii) Use the expressions in (v) and (vi) to create an expression for the per-unit costs for next year.

viii) Use the expressions in (iv) and (vii), along with the given relationship between this and next year's costs, to create an equation.

ix) Solve the equation in (viii).

x) Interpret the solution in terms of the definition in (i).

If you get stuck, please reply showing your work and reasoning. Thank you! :D
