Can you please tell me how to come to the answer $45:

Paul and John worked together for 1.5 hours cleaning some windows. Then John had to go, and left Paul to work for another hour to finish the job. Altogether they were paid $120. Calculate a fair share of the payment for John.

How many hours did Paul work?

How many hours did John work?

How many hours were worked in total?

What was the payment per hour of work?

Now do you see where $45 comes from?

How many hours did Paul work? = 1.25

How many hours did John work? = 0.25

How many hours were worked in total? = 1.5

What was the payment per hour of work? = $80 means John = .25 x 80 = $20

Now do you see where $45 comes from? still dont get it, sorry....:(

Now that you know how to read the problem, let's try again.

How many hours did Paul work?

How many hours did John work?

How many hours of work in total?

Amount paid per hour is ?

Make sense now?

Each worked 1.5 hours. So total hours is 3 now. Then Paul worked another hour. So total hours is 4!
How many hours did John work? = 1.5

How many hours were worked in total? = 4

So the ratio is

2.5 : 1.5
25 : 15
15/40 x 120 = $45

Is my logic right now?
:)
