I need help with a few problems. Can someone show me how to work these two problems so I can try to do the rest of them on my own? The directions say evalute the expression without using a calculater.
1. 4 -1/2
2. 1 1/3

Hello, Rachel!

I bet those are exponents . . .

\(\displaystyle 1)\;4^{-\frac{1}{2}}\)

We have: \(\displaystyle \:4^{-\frac{1}{2}} \;=\;\frac{1}{4^{\frac{1}{2}}}\;=\;\frac{1}{\sqrt{4}} \;=\;\frac{1}{2}\)

\(\displaystyle 2)\;1^{\frac{1}{3}}\)

\(\displaystyle 1^{\frac{1}{3}} \;=\;\sqrt[3]{1} \;=\;1\)
