I'm sorry, but I do not understand what you are doing. What is the base of the log? What is the argument of the square root? Is there any particular significance to the gap between the "5" and the "31.2"? Does this indicate multiplication?

When you reply, please use the formatting explained in the "Karl's Notes" link in the "Forum Help" pull-down menu at the very top of the page. Please also include the calculator keystrokes you're using to get your answer of "2.14".

Thank you.

Eliz.

The fifth root of 32 is 2.
The fifth root of 31.2 is a bit less than 2.

What ever shall we use? Calculators? Differentials?

You're in the calculus section, so I'll guess the latter.

If y = x^(1/5), then dy = (1/5)*x^(-4/5)*dx, for x = 2, dx = 31.2-32 = 0.8
