Given a function f(x,y) = x+y^2, I am asked to find the traces of this graph and sketch the graph in the first octant of the 3d-plane. However, I am unfamiliar with this type of surface and need help as to how to proceed with this. I am having trouble creating a three-dimensional shape for this graph.

If by "traces" you mean what I would call "level curves" then they are graphs, in the xy-plane, of \(\displaystyle x+ y^2= C\) for C constant. That can be written \(\displaystyle x= C- y^2\) and is a family of parabolas with vertex at (0, 0) and axis along the x-axis.
