Here is work shown for a solution:
Let  (x217) = the  number  of  jigsaw  pieces  assembled  on  the  first  day.\displaystyle Let \ \ (x - 2\cdot 17) \ = \ the \ \ number \ \ of \ \ jigsaw \ \ pieces \ \ assembled \ \ on \ \ the \ \ first \ \ day.

Then  (x217) + (x117) + x + (x+117) + (x+217) = 600\displaystyle Then \ \ (x - 2\cdot 17) \ + \ (x - 1\cdot17) \ + \ x \ + \ (x + 1\cdot 17) \ + \ (x + 2\cdot17) \ = \ 600

5x = 600\displaystyle 5x \ = \ 600

x = 120\displaystyle x \ = \ 120

Substitute  x = 120  into  (x217):\displaystyle Substitute \ \ x \ = \ 120 \ \ into \ \ (x - 2\cdot17):

12034 = 86\displaystyle 120 - 34 \ = \ 86
