What is the definition of complementary angles?

What is the sum of the angles of a triangle?

is this the way?

i already know that the sum of angles for a right angle triangle is 180 and i know that two angles are complementary if their sum is 90 degrees. however, i need to construct the proof.

can i say something like this:

statement reason
----------------- - ---------------

given <1 + <2 + 90(for the right angle)=180 since right angle triangle
then <1 + <2 must be 90 since <1+<2=180-90
therefore <1 & <2 are complementary since <1+<2=90
