In a shipment of 100 bags of cookies, each bag contains 20 cookies. Before accepting shipment, Sam opened a bag and counted the number of chocolate chips in 10 cookies.

Give a reason for testing only a sample.

My answer: So he doesn't have to buy all the cookies if he doesn't want to.

My teacher's answer: So he doesn't have to count it all

ISN'T THAT THE SAME THING? I mean does it matter? At first he told me I got the answer right, and he would record my grade in the grade book, but today I found out he never gave me the point he took off and now he says that he never said that before. He looks at the answer and laughs like a stupid hyena and yells that not even close!!!

With your answer...So he doesn't have to buy all the cookies if he doesn't want to.
This does not give any detail as to the reason...if he doesn't want to.

The response the teacher is guiding you to is to understand sampling techniques. You could count them all- time consuming effort or you could do a random sample and base your response on this.

yea...but why would he tell me it was right in the first place? so technically it is right....he just doesn't want me to have an A in the class

If you can't tell that your teacher's answer and yours are not quite the same thing, then I think you may have missed some important points from your class.

And looking at your post, I am reminded why it was that I decided to take early retirement from teaching.

I think this is completely unfair...i think it's wrong to tell someone that they are right and completely forget that they have said it.....he gave everyone the point except for mine. At the beginning he even said I shouldn't have marked you wrong because I gave everyone the point.

i actually went to two other math teachers that gives out the same tests and they both told me that my answer works for the question and I told my teacher so, but he wouldn't give me the ONE point because he's headstrong and he can't admit to his own stupidity

Just think about this as well.....

We all learn from mistakes, but we also need to forgive mistakes made.
I assume you have made 1 or 2 mistakes in your life - allow the teacher some space to do so.

What is the aim of class(and life)- to learn.

Teachers do not have a hidden desire to not give A's out - rather the opposite. A class full of A students - what a dream.

yea but you see...i NEED this A! i mean this determines my future. I need to get into a good college, i really don't want to end up in community college. and I just need HALF a point to get an A. I'm sure you would be mad too if you were in my position. If i wasn't right about the question and I needed half a point to get an A, I wouldn't be mad at all.

I'm sorry, but there is nothing we, as complete strangers to your school, your district, your instructor, and your department, could possibly do to change your grade.

Leaving aside the dubious claim that your entire future hinges on this one single solitary point, you need to speak to someone within your school system who has the ability and authority to enter the debate. Chat on an Internet message board isn't going to accomplish anything useful.

Instead, invest that time and energy into making sure that you know the material well, so that you can present an intelligent, calm, and well-reasoned mathematical argument, free of the hostility and childish name-calling thus-far displayed.

Good luck.

Eliz.

im guessing by the type of question u asked your in probally grade 7 or 8 so honestly don't worry about it its one mark and colleges dont look back at what your marks were this far back
