I am a very mature college student who is struggling with Math...I am hoping that someone can assist me with the following:

106:156:x=r:158:174
x=? y=?

Thank you.

There is no "y", so I don't know what they're wanting for that. :shock:

In general, to solve a proportion, one "cross multiplies" and solves the resulting linear equation. For instance, given "3:2 = m:30", one would set up the fractional proportionality equation as "3/2 = m/30", multiply the denominators "up" (and "across" the "equals" sign) as "3m = (2)(30)" (that is, 3m = 60), and then solve as "m = 20".

Follow the same general process to find the value of x, using the second and third "parts" of each ratio to create the proportion.

If you have

a : b : c = d : e : f

then

a : b = c : d

and

b : c = e : f

and

a : c = d : f

So that was three equation in one linew
