Hi guys I really need help on this.

I have fewer than 20 candies. I want to pack them into plastic bags.
If i pack 3 candies in each bag, I will have 4 extra candies left over.
If I pack 5 candies in each bag, I will be short of 2 candies.
How many candies do I have?

Im stuck at if X < 20.

Please help me.. :(

Something is not explained.....
How can you have 4 candles left-over while you are packing 3 to a package?

Hi,
First of all you have less than 20 candies and you are making 3 and 5 pairs respectively.
You said when you make 3 pairs 4 extra candies left over so in those 4 candies you can make one more 3 candies pair right??
then 1 candy left(imagine smileys as candy ;-);-);-);-) i took 3 out of it then 1 left).

and imagine in this way

If i pack 3 candies in each bag, I will have 4 extra candies left over.-------if you divide the number by 3 remainder is 1
If I pack 5 candies in each bag, I will be short of 2 candies----------------means you need 3 more candies to make 5 candies pair.

so that number would be 13
if you break it

13
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 (1 candy left)
5 + 5 + 3 ( 2 more need to make 5 candy pair).

Hope i helped you;-)

 It's possible to have 4 left over, if the number of bags is limited.

PS: In English, the word pair means two. Instead of saying "3 pairs", say "groups of 3".

Hi,
In question there is no specifically said something about the bags,so we can assume there are enough bags.

and yes i should say grp of 3..

Thanks

But there is something said about four candies left over, when packaging three candies per bag. If there were enough bags, then there would not be four candies left over after packaging (there would be only one candy left over). Four candies left over implies one bag short.

If you solve the system of equations posted by Denis, then you will discover how many bags there are (even though the exercise does not ask for the bag count).
