A chef had some onions. He used 2/7 of them on Saturday and 1/9 of the rest on Sunday. He then bought another 161 onions. In the end, he had as many onions as he had at first. How many onions did he have at first?

Need some help with this question? Please help. Thanks alot

What help do you need? Please show us how far you got:

In particular, we'll want to see whether you can use a little algebra, or have to just write fractions or draw pictures or something.

For one approach, what fraction of the original amount was used on Sunday? What fraction was left after that?

Hi thanks for the reply. It has to be solved by using just fractions..

Do you have the solution?

Yes, we have a solution but this is a math help site where we want you to solve the problem with hints from us.

The chef used 2/7 of the total number of onions on Saturday leaving 5/7of the total left. Then on Sunday he used 1/9 of the rest, so he used (1/9)(5/7) of the total = 5/63 of the total.

So on Saturday he used 2/7 of the total and on Sunday he used 5/63 of the total. So how much of the total did he use all together?
