When Alan gets home from a long day at the soccer field he finds 1/2 of a sandwich in the refrigerator. He cuts the sandwich into thirds and eats one of them.

A.) What fraction of the sandwich does Alan eat? Draw a picture to illustrate.

B.) Write a number sentence that can be used to solve the problem.

When Alan gets home from a long day at the soccer field he finds 1/2 of a sandwich in the refrigerator.
Draw a picture of the whole sandwich. Shade the portion which was already gone.

He cuts the sandwich into thirds...
Draw lines to illustrate his cutting.

...and eats one of them.
Shade in the portion he eats (in a manner different from your first shading, above).

A.) What fraction of the sandwich does Alan eat? Draw a picture to illustrate.
Draw lines on the portion first shaded, so they match the lines on the portion originally not shaded. How many (equal) pieces are formed by these lines? So what fraction did he eat?

B.) Write a number sentence that can be used to solve the problem.
When you reply, please explain clearly exactly where you are getting into trouble, showing your work and reasoning up to that point. Thank you! ;)
