Recent census data in China indicates that in one major province the number of men aged 20-26 is 26,583,000. The number of women of the same age group in the same province is 26,092,500.

If the chance of a first-born child being a boy is 0.49, what are the odds that the Chinese government was correct to challenge its critics regarding the effects of the one-child policy?

I am not sure where to start with this problem...

Thank you!

What is the relative percentage of men versus women? With the one-child policy leading to a high rate of female infanticide (or perhaps "selective reduction of disfavored genders"), what is likely to be the long-term result?

Put frankly: In twenty to thirty years, how many men will not be able to find a wife, without "importing" from outside the country?

Eliz.
