Suppose you randomly choose a tetter in the alphabet from A to L. What are the odds against choosing a vowel?
Please show us what you have tried and exactly where you are stuck.Suppose you randomly choose a tetter in the alphabet from A to L. What are the odds against choosing a vowel?
How many vowels are there from a to l?Suppose you randomly choose a tetter in the alphabet from A to L. What are the odds against choosing a vowel?

Actually, no; pka's hints are (if taken directly) about a different question than was asked.favorable outcomes divided by the number of possible outcomes.
you have 12 letters form A to L
A,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l (these are all the possibilities you have)
but you want the vowels that are in this range of possible outcomes.
how many vowels you have in there?.
you have 3 vowels to choose in 12 possibilities.
these are your odds against choosing a vowel
3/12
pka just said it. you just had to do this little bit of thinking.
ps: of course, this is assuming you're talking about the English alphabet.
Oh, thanks, Doctor Peterson. I thought it kind of strange because i have never seen a probability problem phrased that way, at least not those i have dealt with. Now it makes a lot of sense.Actually, no; pka's hints are (if taken directly) about a different question than was asked.
The "odds against" an event is the ratio "ways to fail":"ways to succeed". What you found is the probability of choosing a vowel, which is the fraction "ways to succeed"/"ways to try".
What is the best to andwer this, if i can ask a question in a thread which is not mine.Oh, thanks, Doctor Peterson. I thought it kind of strange because i have never seen a probability problem phrased that way, at least not those i have dealt with. Now it makes a lot of sense.
There are 3 vowels and 9 non-vowels, for a total of 12 letters. "Success" and "favorable" are the same thing. So:How many vowels are there from a to l?= 3
How many letters are there from a to l?
=12
total number of outcomes on choosing a vowel =12
number of favorable outcomes=3
Number of unfavorable outcomes=12-3
9
odds in favor of choosing a vowel is 3 over 9.
odds against choosing a vowel
Odds = success/failures
Will favorable outcomes be considered 'successes'?.
Thanks a million, Doc.!!. I will study it thoroughly!.There are 3 vowels and 9 non-vowels, for a total of 12 letters. "Success" and "favorable" are the same thing. So:
Note that probability is a fraction (or decimal or percentage); odds are a ratio. We say "to", not "over".
- Probability of choosing a vowel = success/total = 3/12 = 1/4
- Odds in favor of choosing a vowel = success:failure = 3:9 = 1:3
- Odds against choosing a vowel = failure:success = 9:3 = 3:1
