maria has cloth in four colors (red, blue, green, yellow) and two styles (large, small) for the school logo. The flag she is making will have two different stripes with white in the middle and the logo. What is the probability that her design will have red and blue stripes and the large logo?

I have the following:

RB BG GY YY
RG BY GG
RY BB
RR

That would make it 25% or 1/4? This is my son's math problem and I am having a hard time explaining it to him because i can't figure it out myself.

Hello, bnizzle!

Maria has cloth in four colors (red, blue, green, yellow) and two sizes (large, small) for the school logo.
The flag she is making will have two different stripes with white in the middle and the logo.
What is the probability that her design will have red and blue stripes and the large logo?

If I understand the problem, the flag looks like this:

. . \(\displaystyle \begin{array}{ccc}* & --------- & * \\ | & \text{Color (4 choices)} & | \\ * & --------- & * \\ | & \text{Logo (2 choices)} & | \\ * & --------- & * \\ | & \text{Color (3 choices)} & | \\ * & --------- & * \end{array}\)

Hence, there are: \(\displaystyle 4\cdot2\cdot3 \,=\,24\) possible flags.

There are two that satisfy the conditions: ..\(\displaystyle \boxed{\begin{array}{c} \text{Red} \\ \text{Large} \\ \text{Blue} \end{array}} \quad \boxed{\begin{array}{c}\text{Blue} \\ \text{Large} \\ \text{Red} \end{array}} \)

Therefore, the probability is: .\(\displaystyle \dfrac{2}{24} \,=\,\dfrac{1}{12} \,=\,8\tfrac{1}{3}\%\)
