For a certain city, the population P grows at the rate of 1.5% per year. The formula gives the population t years after 1998. Find the population in (a) 1999 and (b) 2000

For a certain city, the population P grows at the rate of 1.5% per year. The formula gives the population t years after 1998. Find the population in (a) 1999 and (b) 2000

1. Let \(\displaystyle P_{1998}, P_{1999}, P_{2000}}\) denote the population at 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively.

2. Then you know:

\(\displaystyle \displaystyle{\frac{P_{1999}}{P_{1998}}=1+0.015}\)

and

\(\displaystyle \displaystyle{\frac{P_{2000}}{P_{1999}}=1+0.015}\)

or

\(\displaystyle \displaystyle{\frac{P_{2000}}{P_{1998}}=(1+0.015)^2}\)

3. Solve for the unknown value.
