O.K., so I'm two problems away from finishing all of Allyssa's last homework assignment. I'm two assignments ahead of her, and now I'm stumped again....
the problem I'm working on reads:4/3 - 1/12x < -3/4
I need to subtract 4/3 from each side:
4/3 - 4/3 - 1/12x < -3/4 - 4/3
- 1/12x < -3/4 - 4/3...this is where I'm stuck...please help...
Thanks,

You surely now how add fractions.....

\(\displaystyle -\frac{3}{4} - \frac{4}{3} \ = \ -\left (\frac{3}{4} + \frac{4}{3}\right )\)

Sorry...I'm sure that you might find this absurd, but it seems that I have forgotten how to add this...can't remember which is the numerator or denominator, or how to complete this...got out of school in 1975, and haven't had a need for this info., UNTIL now! I know ...I feel REALLY LAME, but I need a refresher course...I don't even care if you use the same equation...I just need to know HOW to solve it, as my brain seem to have collected TOO much dust over that memory!!! PLEASE BE KIND, and help an "Old Lady" help her Grand daughter...Please

ok...thank you, by the way...so I think it's supposed to read...
4/3 +3/4= 16/12 + 9/12 = 25/12 = 2 1/12 = 2 1/6
Have I got it correct? I knew it was easy,(Sure hope I've got it right ...NOW), I just couldn't get the memory to surface!! I've BOOKMARKED this page as, I'm sure that I'll be needing help again
Thank you for BEING HERE!!!!!! Ya'll are WONDERFUL!!!

I went back and looked at the original post...4/3 - 1/12x<-3/4 so lets see if I've got a grip on this...
4/3 - 4/3 -1/12x < -3/4 -4/3
-1/12x < -(3/4 + 4/3)
-1/12x < -(9/12 + 16/12)
1/12 -1/12x < -25/12 +1/12
x < -2

Did I get it? If not, where did I go wrong...

4/3 - 4/3 -1/12x < -3/4 -4/3
-1/12x < -(3/4 + 4/3)
-1/12x < -(9/12 + 16/12)

-x/12 < - 25/12

multiply both sides by (-12) - in solving inequalities, multiplying by negative numbers "flips" the inequality sign

-x/12 *(-12) > -25/12 * (-12)

x > 25

1/12 -1/12x < -25/12 +1/12
x < -2

Did I get it? If not, where did I go wrong...

WHY do you show 2 1/12 = 2 1/6 ?
That's as sinful(!) as 12 = 6

OK, you have:
4/3 - 1/12x < -3/4
which is same as:
4/3 - x/12 < -3/4
Get rid of fractions right away; multiply by the LCM 12:
16 - x < -9
Multiply by -1 to change signs; this means the < is changed to > (as Reverend Khan showed you!):
-16 + x > 9
Wrap up:
x > 9 + 16
x > 25

Thassa way I like to handle these...
