I need help with multiplying and dividing equations together
for example (2x+7)(-3^2 + 11x -8) and 3x(-4^2+5x+14)

Hey Jen,

Distribute each term in your first factor across each term in your second factor:

\(\displaystyle (2x+7)(-3x^2+11x-8)\)

I assumed you inadvertently left out an x in your quadratic term.

\(\displaystyle 2x(-3x^2+11x-8)+7(-3x^2+11x-8)\)

\(\displaystyle -6x^3+22x^2-16x-21x^2+77x-56\)

Combine terms and simplify.

The second one is easier. Just multiply each term in your second factor by 3x. Did you leave out the x again here?

Hi Jen... You really have to be careful when you're typing these things in. For multiplying polynomials, I would highly recommend the series of lessons on purplemath.com, which is a site maintained by one of this board's moderators.

Multiplying polynomials: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/polymult.htm

Then, if you go to the index, you can see lessons that are very clear in all sorts of algebraic topics. You say you need help with dividing [polynomials] as well but didn't provide any sample problems. There's a great lesson for that, too:

Dividing polynomials (in three parts): http://www.purplemath.com/modules/polydiv.htm

If you want to post more problems on this board, please read the "Read Before Posting" section first, which is in most of the forums. Show us what you've done, and then we can better help you get through the problems.
