For the polynomials...

5x^2-10x-15

4a^3-12a^2-16a

ax^2-9a+bx^2-9b

x^3-6x^2y-5xy^2

How would I factor those?

Re: Polynomial factoring?

Please show us your work and indicate exactly where you are stuck.

Hints:

1) Is there a factor that is present in all the terms of the function? Factor that out.

for example, for the second problem: 4a^3-12a^2-16a

You can see - 'a' is a common factor in all of the terms - factor that out --> 4a^3-12a^2-16a = a(4a^2 - 12a -16)

Are there anymore common factors - if yes - factor those out.

for example, for the first problem: 5x^2-10x-15

You can see - '5' is a common factor in all of the terms - factor that out --> 5x^2 - 10x - 15 = 5(x^2 - 2x - 3)

Are there anymore common factors - if yes - factor those out.

2) after step #1, for the given set of problems, you'll be left with a quadratic. Factorize it with your favorite method.

If you are still stuck, write back showing work - and indicate exactly where you are stuck.
