I am studying for the GRE and it suggests plugging in numbers to quickly solve algebra problems with variables. It says to use nice, clean, easy to work with numbers... I want to pick 3 different numbers to use for each problem like this. What are good numbers to use? any negative numbers? A book says 0 and 1 are bad numbers and can lead to incorrect answers.

Tough call. It would depend on the values and on the particular problem. Can you post one? We can discuss the benefits and costs associated with the cheesy method suggested.
