I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could explain to me how to get the answers. Im in the process of trying to join the navy an these are similar questions on the asvab test that i cant seem to pass. :( thanks to any responses.

1.) A dad traveled 36 miles in 12hrs . The son traveled double in the same amount of time. Where was the son at in 9hrs?

2.)A tree with a shadow of 24 ft has a shadow 8 ft. A tree standing next to it stands 72 ft. Whats its shadow? ( i came up with 24 ft? not sure though...)

3.)A rectangles perimeter equals 36 inches. The width is bigger then the length by 4 inches what's its length??

This is a ratio problem.

How far did the son travel in 12 hours?

How far did the son travel in 1 hour?

How far did the son travel in 9 hours?

2.)A tree with a shadow of 24 ft has a shadow 8 ft. A tree standing next to it stands 72 ft. Whats its shadow? ( i came up with 24 ft? - correct - not sure though...)

3.)A rectangles perimeter equals 36 inches. The width is bigger then the length by 4 inches what's its length??

What is the equation for perimeter of a rectangle (in terms of its width and length)?

The width is bigger [than] the length by 4

Let symbol L represent the length

Then expression L + 4 represents the width

Use the formula suggested by Subhotosh with the given perimeter and the symbolic length and width above to write and solve an equation for L.

If you get stuck, please show your work or ask specific questions, so that we might determine where to continue helping.

Cheers 8-)
