Give the equation of the inverse of the function algabraically

Step 1. y = (x+1)^2
Step 2. x = (y+1)^2
Step 3. x = y^2 + 2y +1

Please help me solve for y, if someone can help me out with this question, I think I will be able to understand the concept and solve the rest of the questions I have on my own.
Thanks

Hello, nigel!

Give the equation of the inverse of the function algabraically

Step 1: \(\displaystyle \, y \:= \:(x\,+\,1)^2\)
Step 2: \(\displaystyle \, x \:= \:(y\,+\,1)^2\)
Step 3: \(\displaystyle \, x \:= \:y^2\,+\,2y\,+\,1\;\) . . . no

Don't square it out . . . You're solving for \(\displaystyle y\). remember?

We have: \(\displaystyle \,(y\,+\,1)^2\:=\;x\)

Take the square root: \(\displaystyle \.y\,+\,1\:=\:\pm\sqrt{x}\)

Then: \(\displaystyle \,y\:=\:-1\,\pm\,\sqrt{x}\)
