The equation
3.7 = r / 5.4
says that the result when a number "r" is divided by 5.4 is 3.7. So, how do we find out what "r" was?
We need to "undo" the division by 5.4. The operation which "undoes" division is multiplication. Since r was divided by 5.4, we'll MULTIPLY by 5.4....but, if we multiply one side of an equation by something, we must do the same thing to the other side to keep the equation "balanced."
Multiply both sides of the equation by 5.4:
(5.4)(3.7) = (5.4)(r / 5.4)
On the right side, the multiplication by 5.4 undoes the division by 5.4, leaving just r. On the left side there is a calculation that you can do.
I hope this helps you.
