a^2 = ab, that means that a^2 - ab = 0, so the last two steps won't work because you'd just have 2*0 = 0 and 0/0 is indeterminate, not 1!

In my experience, all of these "2 = 1" (or "1 = 0") sorts of "proofs" work by exactly the mechanism in the previous reply: a stealthy division by zero. :wink:
