Please help as i'm terrible at maths and this is too tricky for me!:(

PROBLEM:
There are 2 exams in one module. One exam is worth 30% the other is worth 70% of the overall grade.
You score 60% in the exam worth 30%.
What must you score in the 2nd exam to get an overall 40% in the module.

Thanks in advance!

I'd start this problem by making a list of everything I know about the problem. Perhaps it might look something like this:

1) The score you need in the whole module is the average of the two individual exam scores
2) The score on the first exam was 60%
3) The first exam is worth 30% of the total
4) The part of the final score which comes from the first exam, then, is equal to 60% of 30%
5) The score of the second exam might be unknown but the percentage of the final score it's worth is known - that's 70%
6) The exact score on the second exam can then be thought of as some percentage (this unknown is what you're solving for) of 70%

From there, try and formulate an equation for the average score of the two tests. Remember that when turning a word problem into a numbers problem, the key word of means multiply.

Hi. What have you tried? Show us your work, please. This is a math help forum, not a post your problem and we'll do it for you forum.
I will supply you with a hint. Let X be the grade on the 30% module, Y be the grade on the 70% module and Z be the overall average for both module. Then Z=.30X + .70Y. There are three unknowns in this formula and you know two of them. So solve for the unknown.
